I was born a child of the Late '50's when the hula hoop was first around. Oddly enough it never held much fascination for me. My dance experience began when I was quite young with small doses of ballet and modern dance. Like the hula hoop, dance did not hold the same fascination as sports and other hobbies and I quickly abandoned dancing for other teenage pursuits.
In my young adult life I was lucky enough to meet a wonderful teacher who taught my young daughters Polynesian dance. She encouraged me to join and I was hooked on dancing for exercise. I lost weight and enjoyed and learned many lessons in dance and in life from my wonderful Kumu hula.
In the 90's we moved to Texas and Polynesian dance was not exactly readily available so dance was again put aside. As I was searching for some kind of alternative to crunches to strengthen my core, I was told hula hooping is a great ab workout and I googled "hula hoop". That was the beginning of the end for me. I found Hoopnotica's website and couldn't believe the beautiful and graceful dance with hula hoops. I had to be a part of it. I quickly learned the basics from Rayna McInturf of Hoopnotica and was then encouraged to become a certified Hoopnotica instructor, which I did in Austin in 2008. And the rest has been an ongoing adventure.
Hooping has changed and enriched my life in many wonderful ways. It has blessed me with increased physical, mental and spiritual awareness with it's positive healing power.
For me, hooping has become more than just a way to burn calories and strengthen the core. It has introduced fun and creativity back into my life. It soothes the mind with it's ability to induce joy and calmness. Hooping is a moving meditation.
My mission is to encourage as many as possible to join me on this adventure into yourself through the hoop.
